Cargo van strikes and kills bear

ELLSWORTH — Hancock County Sheriff’s deputies reported Thursday that a cargo van sustained minor damage after striking and killing a bear that ran into the roadway.

The bear ran into the roadway of Route 1 in Gouldsboro around 2:35 a.m. Wednesday, colliding with the van’s passenger side, according to Deputy Brian Archer.

Vladimir Gelfand, 51, of Harrington was traveling east in a 2006 Chevrolet Express, Archer said.

Gelfand was unable to avoid the collision, Archer said. The damage the van sustained was non-reportable, meaning it was under $1,000.

Gelfand was given a tag for the bear and took possession of it, the deputy said.
