ELLSWORTH — A Brewer man was arrested Friday after police said they caught him stealing money out of vehicles parked near the swimming area at the boat launch on Branch Lake Friday.
Kevin Morse, 28, was charged with two counts of theft and two counts of burglary of a motor vehicle “after being observed, by officers conducting a detail, stealing money out of vehicles” parked at the boat launch.
Officers were at the boat launch after having received complaints of similar thefts the previous two days. On July 17, two women reported having items stolen out of their vehicle while it was “locked and the windows were up.”
The next day, a purse was reported stolen out of a locked vehicle parked in the same area.
So on Friday, Lt. Harold Page said Sgt. Shawn Willey and Officer James Gillway took a vehicle out to the scene and set it up as a “bait vehicle.” They left money in the vehicle, and then sat in wait, watching.
“It wasn’t too long before the guy showed up,” said Page, referring to Morse.
Morse allegedly took some cash from one car, and then took cash from the bait vehicle, too. Officers then confronted Morse, charged him and took him to jail.
Page said Morse denied any involvement in the two incidents that had been reported previously, and he was not charged in connection with those incidents as police did not have any evidence linking him to the crimes.
