Charges filed against Old Town men in Amherst overdose incident

ELLSWORTH — The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office has charged a motorist and his passenger, both of whom suffered apparent drug overdoses on Route 9 in Amherst Oct. 5.

Authorities were sent to the scene after getting a call from a concerned motorist about a vehicle’s erratic operation. Moments later, the vehicle went off the road and at least one person appeared to have passed out.

While EMS and Deputy Dana Austin were tending to the motorist, the passenger also became unresponsive from a suspected drug overdose, police said.

Lt. Chris Thornton said Arnold Gross III, 35, of Old Town was charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of an intoxicant (drugs, specifically opiates) and violating conditions of his release.

Gross had bail conditions stemming from an OUI (drug) arrest Sept. 21 in the town of Clifton, Thornton said. The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office handled that incident.

Police summoned Joseph Finnemore, 32, of Old Town on a charge of violating conditions of his release. There was no word on the underlying charge for the bail conditions.

Thornton said additional charges are likely.
