Chamber honors Eleanor Jones as Citizen of the Year

Eleanor Jones, seen here at a 2013 event recognizing longtime Ellsworth American subscribers, has been named the Citizen of the Year by the Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce.

ELLSWORTH — Eleanor Jones has been named the Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce’s Citizen of the Year for 2014.

“She just is representative of a good, solid community member,” said Phyllis Young, the chamber’s associate director. “She’s spent all her life trying to help others.”

That helping has taken many forms. After a career spent teaching in other parts of Maine and then Connecticut, Jones — a 1944 graduate of Ellsworth High School — returned to her hometown in 1990.

She soon became involved with the Ellsworth Lioness Club, where her family was already well represented in the membership rolls. She began by visiting residents in local nursing homes, and also started delivering meals to shut-ins and senior citizens.

About seven years ago, she began volunteering as a driver with the Friends in Action group. She takes senior citizens to medical appointments or to visit friends or family in a nursing home, and also picks up prescriptions for people.

Jones and other award recipients will be honored at the chamber’s annual meeting and social event Thursday, May 29, at Big Cat’s Catering in Hancock.
