Caterpillar caution on Mines Road

The Maine Department of Transportation erected a sign warning motorists to slow down on a two-mile stretch of the Mines Road in Blue Hill Monday thanks to so many caterpillars falling from oak trees into the roadway that it becomes slippery when rain falls on the squished caterpillars.

Sedgwick Fire Chief David Carter said, “Yesterday, when it started raining, it got slick.”

The chief said the caterpillars have “decimated” the oak trees in the area.
