Castine considers streetscape options for downtown

CASTINE — It seems most people agree changes are needed in the town’s historic section, but there is broad disagreement on how to make downtown more attractive for commerce and retain its historic character.

After hearing several residents complain about a streetscape plan that proposed widening Main Street and eliminating 10 parking spots, the selectmen voted unanimously Aug. 19 to review other options for the project.

The town is in the second phase of its street and infrastructure improvement project. Phase two would replace the storm drains and refurbish Main Street, the sidewalks and parking spots.
