ACADIA NAT’L PARK — Because of the warmer temperatures and extensive melting, the park temporarily closed the carriage roads on Wednesday to allow the gravel surfaces to thaw without incurring any damage.
Walking, biking or running on the carriage roads at this time causes significant damage which is costly to repair, said chief of maintenance Keith Johnston.
The roads generally remain closed for approximately two weeks. Closing the carriage roads at this time, however, does not preclude visitors from enjoying the park. Some portions of the Ocean Drive are open and many trail heads are accessed from state roads. Mr. Johnston also asked that people not drive on any of the west side roads in the park.
