SOUTHWEST HARBOR — The first season for the MDI Community Campfire Coalition has been a success, one of the organizers said this week.
Elena Scotti, executive director of the Harbor House Community Service Agency, said the coalition provided 40 families on Mount Desert Island with heating assistance over the winter.
Heating assistance was provided to 14 families in Southwest Harbor, 12 families in Bar Harbor, eight families in Mount Desert and six families in Tremont.
The MDI Campfire Coalition was organized last fall and has about 20 stakeholders from nonprofit organizations, civic groups, churches and towns. Harbor House in Southwest Harbor, the Neighborhood House in Northeast Harbor and the Maine Sea Coast Mission in Bar Harbor are the three agencies providing core services for the coalition.
Along with providing heating assistance, the coalition also maintained a telephone support line, daytime warming shelters and a hot lunch program. About $34,000 was raised to support the coalition’s efforts.
Coalition members are looking at providing new services during the next heating season.
