SOUTHWEST HARBOR — The cost of running the town’s water department will be $34,600 lower next year, a drop of about 5 percent.
A small part of the reduction is a decision by voters at the town meeting in May to stop having fluoride added to the water supply. That will cut the budget by $3,000.
A much larger factor in the budget reduction is the plan to spend about $29,000 less on water plant and pump station maintenance in the coming year. That follows an increase of about the same amount in maintenance costs from 2012 to 2013.
The water department budget for 2014 totals $639,175.
