Porter now Tax Collector

MOUNT DESERT — Someone has to collect the taxes, and town manager Durlin Lunt says Margaret Porter is the best person for the job.

John Graves has been serving as the town’s finance director, which included the jobs of treasurer and tax collector. But the board of selectmen recently approved Mr. Lunt’s recommendation to split those duties between two people.

“Both the Maine Municipal Association and our auditors believe it’s best practice to have the positions separate,” Mr. Lunt said. “For internal control it’s not totally compatible for both positions to be held by the same person.”

Ms. Porter, a former deputy tax collector in Bar Harbor, is accounts payable clerk in the Mount Desert town office.

“We’re adding the tax collection duties to her job,” Mr. Lunt said. “Given her background, she seemed to be the person who would be best suited for that. It’s always nice to have someone with experience.”
