ELLSWORTH — Maine Pet & Aquarium is celebrating its 17th anniversary Saturday at the store’s new location on Route 1 near Helen’s Restaurant.

The store had been located at the Maine Coast Mall since its opening in 1994.

“We needed more space,” said Sharon Yeung, whose husband, Alex, started the business after graduating with a marine biology degree.

“We definitely have added a lot more to our inventory and selection,” said Yeung. The fish inventory, in particular, has grown.

The couple had been leasing space at Maine Coast Mall but purchased the Route 1 property and renovated the building to make it more energy-efficient.

The property includes space for a fenced community dog park.

The store is holding fund-raising events, including a bake sale and raffles, on Saturday to help construct the dog park, which will be free for the dog community to use.

Maine Pet & Aquarium also is holding a 20 percent off storewide sale Saturday.

A mobile veterinary clinic will be on site to provide basic veterinary care (cash only) from noon to 1 p.m.

The Hancock County SPCA also will hold a feline adoption event.

The Yeungs also own two pet stores in Bangor, Pets Pro at the Airport Mall and Lulu Pets & Boutique at the Bangor Mall.
