New Pilgrim’s Inn owners wrap up first season

DEER ISLE — A Pennsylvania couple are wrapping up their first season as the new owners of the historic Pilgrim’s Inn and Whale’s Rib Tavern.

The inn closes for the season Oct. 16 and the restaurant closes Oct. 14.

Nicole Neder and Scott Hall bought the inn from Tony Lawless and Tina Oddleifson last February.

Hall had been a senior manager for a medical device company and Neder has been a dental hygienist for the past 20 years. Neder also has a degree in landscape architecture and had a small landscaping business.

The couple had been looking for an inn to buy for a while before finding the Deer Isle property.

“Life is short and we were up for a big adventure,” Neder said. She said the couple had been looking at career changes.

Hall said, “If we were going to do something different, why not do it for ourselves.”

The first season has been busy and the new owners have had staffing struggles like the rest of the hospitality industry.

The intent of the first season was “to learn and understand the business before making changes,” Hall said. “There’s been an immense amount of learning of course.”

Hall and Neder plan to live at the inn year-round so they can work on the circa 1793 property in the off-season.

The community has been welcoming. Several island business owners and residents have stopped at the inn to introduce themselves, which the couple said they appreciate because they’ve been so busy it’s been difficult to leave.

The inn and restaurant open for the season in May.
