{youtube}oRYo0nrGRz4&list{/youtube} WINTER HARBOR — Pam Di Ruggiero has groomed everything from dogs to rabbits and is now open for business in the heart of Winter Harbor.
She and her husband, Arnold, recently relocated to the area from Summit, N.J., where Pam ran her own mobile pet grooming business for years.
Her approach, she said, is to first make the pet as comfortable as possible.
“I get an eyeball on the temperament of the animal, watching for how nervous they might be,” said Di Ruggiero.
She also asks the client — the owner, not the dog — about his or her expectations.
One satisfied customer is Sharon Newman of Winter Harbor, who took her Labradoodle, Sadie, to the Winter Harbor salon for a bath and haircut.
“Talking to Pam ahead of time about what I expected was like talking to an experienced hairdresser, but for dogs,” Newman said.
She said Di Ruggiero took great care in maintaining the same length over the entire coat and the change was noticeable.
“I took one look at Sadie and was absolutely stunned,” Newman said.
In terms of grooming, Di Ruggiero first checks the coat to see what is needed and then looks for any signs of allergies.
Next she trims the pet’s nails, cleans their ears, brushes their coat and then places them in a large, raised tub where the pet is bathed in a relaxing jet system known as a hydro surge.
When it is time to blow dry the fur she chooses one of three settings depending on the pet’s temperament — from loud and more brisk to quiet and soft.
Interested customers should call 1-800-GROOMER and ask for hours and pricing.
