Hancock car business celebrates grand opening

HANCOCK — For years, Tony Murray noticed the empty lot in front of White Birches Motel on Route 1 in Hancock.

“You know,” he remembers saying repeatedly to his wife, Nicole, as they would drive by, “that would be a great place for a used car lot.”

As it turned out, the lot was the perfect place for his new business, Fairway Auto Sales. To celebrate, the Murrays held an open house and ribbon cutting Nov. 19.

“We’ve had a very warm reception from everyone in the community,” said Murray, adding the business’s soft opening was in August.

He also has received support from family, including his mother, Audrey, who died in February after losing a battle with cancer.

“She was a big fan of this place,” he said.

Murray remembers her coming out of surgery telling everyone, “This is Tony. He’s opening a car business,” he said.

His dad, Bob Murray of Bangor, and his wife’s dad, Albert Lash of Stonington, were on hand for the ribbon cutting along with family and friends.

Fairway Auto Sales specializes in cars, trucks and SUVs from 2012 or later with less than 100,000 miles, Murray said. Financing and extended warranties are also available.

Whenever possible, Murray said, he likes to buy cars from individuals and encourages anyone interested in selling a newer car to pay him a visit.

“A lot of the cars that are out here are from previous customers,” said Murray, who worked in the car business for about 20 years, including 15 at Stanley Subaru.

Nicole, who worked for many years in the medical field, handles details such as title work and record keeping.
