FairPoint to extend, upgrade broadband in 44 towns

PORTLAND —  FairPoint Communications has announced that it is planning to expand and upgrade broadband Internet service in 44 Maine towns, including in unserved locations or locations with low-speed access across the Pine Tree state.

Communities in Hancock County in line to be upgraded include Brooksville, Dedham, Ellsworth, Fletcher’s Landing, Orland, Penobscot, Sargentville, Sedgwick and Surry.

FairPoint will leverage $1.03 million from the Federal Communications Commission’s Connect America Fund (CAF), established in 2011 with the sole purpose of accelerating broadband buildout to the 18 million Americans living in rural areas who currently have no access to robust broadband services.
