ELLSWORTH — Family Dollar, located in the Ellsworth Shopping Center near Renys and Shaw’s, will close its doors by July 13, said Assistant Manager Chandler Levesque.
“I hate to see it go,” said Levesque, who said the store’s five employees all have other work lined up. “It’s almost like a cult following.”
Levesque said the company hadn’t given a reason for the store’s closing but that Family Dollar is shutting down 400 of its more than 8,000 stores nationwide and he suspects the Ellsworth location is part of the cut.
Family Dollar is under the umbrella of Dollar Tree, which acquired the company for roughly $9 billion in 2015. Dollar Tree announced in March that it would be closing the stores as well as rebranding several hundred Family Dollar stores under the Dollar Tree name.
Family Dollar sells a wide variety of household staples, including pantry items, household supplies, toiletries and clothing, with most items costing less than $10.
There are at least five dollar stores in Hancock County, according to previous reports in The Ellsworth American. A Family Dollar opened in Blue Hill last year, and there is another one in Bucksport. Sullivan has a Dollar General.
The Ellsworth Family Dollar will have discounts until closing. Items will be 20 percent off through June 1, followed by 30 percent the week after, and then 50 and 75 percent in subsequent weeks.
There is an Ellsworth Dollar Tree in the Marden’s plaza. There is no indication that the company plans to close that location.
