SEDGWICK — The Millbrook Co., which specializes in artisan breads and baked goods, is opening its first retail location in the former Country View Drive-In on Route 15.
“I grew up two houses down, so it was a big part of my childhood,” said bakery owner Jill Smith.
The owners of the Country View, Milton and Nellie Smith, approached Smith’s parents before putting the building and lot on the market.
The family knew it would be a good location for the bakery, which Smith opened in 2006.
A dearth of locally made bagels led Smith to open Millbrook Co. She had moved back to the area in 2005 after working as an executive chef in Portland for nine years.
“I was tired of not having bagels around here,” she said.
Smith began making bagels for herself and then for the Blue Hill Co-op. Smith eventually added bread and baked goods.
Smith sells her products seasonally at farmers markets. She also has a year-round wholesale business providing bread and baked goods for a handful of businesses including the Co-op, Mainescape and The Cave in Brooklin.
Millbrook Co. products will continue to be available at farmers markets in 2013, in part to spread the word about the new location.
“We really do enjoy the farmers’ markets,” Smith said. “It’s a blast.”
