Construction begins at Town Auto site

ELLSWORTH — Construction is under way on two buildings on the former site of Town Auto at 208 High St.

The project, which has changed hands several times, is being developed by Michigan-based company Alrig USA. There will be two buildings totaling 15,081 square feet on the site. The spaces will house five tenants, four in one building and one in the other.

Auto Zone has been confirmed as the tenant for the single-unit, 7,381-square-foot building.

Aspen Dental is set to occupy the largest space in the adjacent building, and an unidentified “mattress store” is slated for one of the other spaces, according to staff in the City Planning Department.

There is a “drive-thru and open patio area opportunity” in the building occupied by Aspen Dental, according to Alrig’s website.

The Planning Board approved a waiver for the number of parking spaces on the site, which, at 97 spaces, is more than normally allowed. Although there will be more parking for the two buildings, there will be “less pavement” on the site, said Assistant Planner Steve Fuller.

City staff members do not yet have a timeline for when the project will be finished.
