BLUE HILL — Vaughn and Melanie Leach have sold the residential and commercial trash disposal side of their Blue Hill Disposal business to Josh Gray of Brooklin.

Gray has been running his own trash disposal business in Brooklin, which his father started several years ago.

In Blue Hill, Vaughn Leach started his business with a pickup truck in 1977. The business grew, necessitating the purchase of a garbage truck in 1985.

Gray worked side by side with Leach for three months this past winter.

“You’ve got to see how miserable this job can be before you commit to buying it,” Leach explained. The first day they went out, in January, there was heavy rain and wind.

After months of negotiation, Gray purchased the residential and commercial waste disposal end on April 1.

The Leaches retained the roll-off container side of the business, which is now called BHD Containers.

BHD Containers has expanded its coverage area, including Belfast, Stockton Springs, Mount Desert Island and inland Hancock County, among others.

Blue Hill Disposal continues to serve Blue Hill, Surry, Brooklin, Sedgwick and Brooksville.
