Apartment conversion planned in Bar Harbor

BAR HARBOR — Hotelier Tom Walsh plans to convert a former downtown office and production facility into an apartment building.

The former Rainwise building, at 25 Federal Street, has been vacant since the meteorological device company moved its operations to Trenton last year. Walsh, whose Ocean Properties company owns the West Street Hotel and a number of other Bar Harbor lodging properties, this week filed plans with the town to convert the building into eight apartment units. A real estate agreement with the current owners is included in the filing.

The renovation project would include converting approximately 12,000 square feet of space into apartments at a cost of $2.4 million according to planning documents. After factoring in design and permitting costs, furnishings and a fire suppression system, the total cost of the project is estimated at $2.84 million.

The planning board will likely take up initial review of the project when they next meet on June 4.
