Bucksport Food Pantry Concerned About Christmas Program

BUCKSPORT — The Bucksport Community Concerns food pantry is worried about its annual Christmas toy drive in light of the No. 2 machine shutdown and accompanying layoffs at the Verso mill.

Food Pantry secretary Linda Hayward explained that in years past, the mill has provided the bulk of the donations for the children’s Christmas gifts.

“With the mill shutting down one machine, we may need some help this year,” Hayward said.

A group of Verso employees puts up a gift tree, which has the children’s gift wishes. They are still going to do the tree this year, but the donations may not be what they’ve been in the past, Hayward said.

The pantry provides toys for about 150 children.

Anyone who would like to donate a toy or a check may contact Hayward at 469-6254.

Hayward is also the contact to sign a child up for the program.
