ORLAND — The Maine State Police said an Orland woman died after she was ejected from a pickup truck that went off the road and struck an embankment on Cedar Swamp Road in Orland Tuesday.
Valerie Seavey, 50, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The crash occurred at 4:15 p.m.
Cedar Swamp Road is off Route 15 near G.M. Allen & Son.
Trooper Travis Chapman said the driver, Robert Cunningham, 48, also of Orland, was westbound in a 2007 Ford Ranger when he lost control of the truck on a corner. After hitting the embankment, the truck came to rest on its wheels in the middle of the road.
“At some point, Seavey was ejected from the vehicle,” Chapman said. “Seavey wasn’t wearing a seat belt.”
Police arrested Cunningham on charges of manslaughter, aggravated operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of an intoxicant, aggravated driving to endanger and speeding 30 miles or more over the speed limit.
Cunningham was taken to the Hancock County Jail. District Attorney Matt Foster said Cunningham should have a bail hearing Wednesday at 1 p.m.
Speed and alcohol appear to be factors in the crash, police said. Trooper Josh Lander is reconstructing the accident.
Sgt. Tim Varney and Cpl. Dan Ryan assisted, as did the Bucksport and Orland fire departments.
