ELLSWORTH — A Franklin man was killed and two other men suffered minor injuries when a pickup truck collided with a box truck on Route 1A on Tuesday afternoon amid heavy rain.
Warren Higgins, 67, of Franklin died at the scene after being treated by emergency medical personnel. The crash was reported near McGowan’s Hill in the area of Nicolin Road around 12:15 p.m.
The road, which is the main thoroughfare between Bangor and Ellsworth, was closed for nearly five hours, according to a press release from the Ellsworth Police Department.
Traffic heading north was diverted west on the Christian Ridge Road in Ellsworth while southbound traffic was diverted via Route 46 in East Holden.
Police said in a press release they found a commercial box truck with “significant damage” in the southbound lane after arriving on the scene Tuesday.
The driver of the box truck, 57-year-old Michael Moore of Brewer, and passenger Carl Condon, 53, of Troy were “out of the truck and walking around,” according to a press release.
They were transported via ambulance to Northern Light Maine Coast Hospital for what police said were “minor bumps and bruises.”
On the northbound side of the road was a 2016 Dodge Ram pickup truck, “sitting perpendicular to the roadway in the ditch.” Higgins was alone in the pickup truck.
Both vehicles had been destroyed in the crash and were towed from the scene.
Police are working to reconstruct the accident and have not yet determined a final cause.
The Ellsworth police and fire departments responded, as did Northern Light Medical Transport, the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, the Maine State Police Commercial Motor Vehicles Division, the Department of Environmental Protection and the Maine Department of Transportation.
