ELLSWORTH — A 19-year-old Eastbrook man enlisted in the military and stationed in South Carolina was escorted back to Maine on Nov. 26 and charged with gross sexual assault (Class A) and unlawful sexual contact (Class D) after an incident with a 14-year-old girl this past summer, according to the Ellsworth Police Department.
Dantae M. Cross was stationed at the Marine Corps Air Station and was arrested by deputies of the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Department, who detained him until Ellsworth Police Department officers were able to escort him back to Maine on Nov. 26.
The alleged sexual assault took place in August, according to a press release from Ellsworth police, and was reported to the department in mid-September. Detectives conducted an investigation and sent charges to be reviewed by the Hancock County District Attorney’s Office, after which an arrest warrant was issued for Cross.
Cross appeared before a judge on Nov. 29 and is free on bail.
