Driver identified in fatal Deer Isle crash

DEER ISLE — A motorist, who died in a single-vehicle crash on Little Deer Isle Road July 12 has been identified as Joseph Perreault of Jonesport, the Maine State Police reported Monday.

Perreault, 28, was driving onto Little Deer Isle from the Deer Isle Bridge just before his vehicle crashed into a monument near the island information center there, police said.

“The vehicle became fully engulfed in flames and explosions were reported coming from the vehicle,” police said. “As a result of the crash the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.”

The state Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the identity of the driver as Perreault.

Trooper Travis Chapman is the lead investigator. Assisting on scene were Sgt. Jason Sattler, Cpl. Gavin Endre, the Deer Isle Fire Department, the Sedgwick Fire Department and Memorial Ambulance.
