Big Read kicks off Oct. 3

ELLSWORTH — The Ellsworth Public Library will launch its National Endowment for the Arts Big Read program in celebration of “Lab Girl” by Hope Jahren with a Women in Science panel discussion on Saturday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m. on Zoom. The NEA Big Read in Ellsworth is presented in partnership with many local organizations, with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.

The kick-off event will feature scientists from The Jackson Laboratory, MDI Biological Laboratory and College of the Atlantic. Participants are invited to submit questions for the panelists by visiting the NEA Big Read Ellsworth Facebook page or emailing [email protected]

Everyone is invited to pick up a free copy of “Lab Girl” at the Ellsworth Public Library during business hours. Copies of the book will also be available at locations around town, including Fogtown Brewing Co.

Ellsworth is one of 84 communities nationwide participating in the NEA Big Read. From Oct. 3-31, the Ellsworth community will celebrate “Lab Girl” by Hope Jahren with a full calendar of virtual events including an author talk and a writing workshop from New York Times bestselling author Amy Stewart, book discussions and activities for kids in partnership with Hancock County 4-H.
