Ben Adams, 81: sailor, musician, gentleman

ELLSWORTH — His dear friends Frank and Bette Pierson observed on Tuesday that Ben Adams died much as he had lived — with music.

“Our long friendship with Ben began and ended with music,” the Piersons wrote. “We became friends when Frank and Ben played in the band Castle of Dreams. Opening night was exactly 40 years ago the night he died. We left him early in the evening with a CD playing music of the ’50s. Troy told us that when the music stopped, Ben died.”

Troy is Troy Adams, the stepson he adopted when he married Troy’s mother, the former Nancy Tilden, in 1970.

“Ben was one of the nicest people I ever met,” Troy said Tuesday. “Kind and sweet, he never raised his voice. He was a smooth-it-over guy.”

Ben and Nancy were married in Ruth Foster’s front parlor on State Street. Troy, 3, was part of the ceremony.

“He married us both,” Troy said.

“Ben was brought up in the traditions of the descendants of John Quincy Adams,” who was the second and sixth president of the United States, the Piersons noted.

Ben Adams had managed retail businesses in Bangor and Burlington, Mass., and owned a women’s clothing store, Adams Apple, on Main Street in the building that today houses Rosborough Insurance.

Adams and wife Nancy took over the management of Jasper’s Restaurant and Motel in 1978 and operated the businesses until 1995.

Through these years, Ben Adams played keyboards with Castle of Dreams, played tennis and sailed.

“We will be forever grateful to Ben for introducing us to the wonderful world of boating,” the Piersons wrote. “We were blessed to learn from him and experience the wonder and beauty of being on the water.”
