ELLSWORTH — With the deadline for submitting nomination papers rapidly approaching, the slate of potential candidates for the local elections on Nov. 2 point to contested races for the City Council and School Board.
With a shade over a week until the deadline, most people who took out papers have yet to return them.
There are two open seats on City Council, currently held by Heather Grindle and John Phillips. John Linnehan, Steven O’Halloran, Erica Applegate, and Casey Hanson all took out papers. Linnehan returned his on Aug. 17. No one else has returned their papers but Hanson announced her candidacy on a campaign Facebook page.
A three-year seat currently held by Abigail Miller and a one-year seat, held by Muneer Hasham, are on the ballot.
For the three-year seat, Miller, Casey Hardwick and Joshua Dudeck have taken out papers, with Miller returning hers Aug. 31.
For the one-year seat, Hasham is the only candidate listed so far.
Kelli Casey, who ran last year, told The American she was running but did not say for which seat and has not yet taken out nomination papers.
Two three-year seats are open, held by Craig MacDonald and Ron Fortier. To date, MacDonald and Kristen Onos have taken out papers.
Nomination papers, with at least 50 and no more than 100 signatures, must be submitted to the City Clerk by 5 p.m. on Sept. 17.
