Animals killed in Eastbrook barn fire

EASTBROOK — A fire of unknown origin broke out around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, claiming a Sugar Hill Road barn and small farm animals, according to Fire Chief Justin Rowell.

“We do not know how it started at this point,” Rowell said. The homeowner reported the fire.

The barn is a total loss and small animals died as well. Rowell said he was not at the fire, so he isn’t sure what types of animals perished.

Hancock Fire Chief Chris Holmes was on scene and said a goat, sheep and some chickens were killed.

In addition to the Eastbrook and Hancock departments, firefighters from Franklin, Sullivan and Sorrento responded. The Gouldsboro, Winter Harbor, Steuben and Lamoine fire departments stood by to provide station coverage for departments on scene.

Water was pumped from nearby Scammon Pond.

Holmes said that with so many volunteer departments struggling to recruit, mutual aid like that provide at the barn fire, is vital.
