American recognized with NENPA awards

ELLSWORTH — The Ellsworth American placed second in general excellence in its circulation category in the New England Better Newspaper Competition. The paper received more than a dozen awards for its writing, photography, advertising and design during the April 30 ceremony in Boston.

This year’s competition drew nearly 2,000 entries that were evaluated by the New England Newspaper & Press Association’s panel of judges.

Of The American, judges in their comments wrote, “It was nicely divided between coverage of the community such as police, court and developments at town hall with ‘brights,’ which told of the community’s accomplishments.”

The paper’s annual Overview section, overseen by Arts and Special Sections Editor Letitia Baldwin, received a first in the business supplement category. Marvin Ott’s Offshore column also had a first-place win. The paper also was recognized for overall best design; arts and entertainment reporting; headline writing; health reporting; graphic design; photography and advertising.

The American’s sister paper, the Mount Desert Islander, won general excellence in its circulation category.
