ELLSWORTH — For the third consecutive year, The Ellsworth American has been named a “Distinguished Newspaper” among large-circulation weeklies at the New England Newspaper Conference.
The event was held virtually this year Nov. 17-19.
Seven Days of Burlington, Vt., was named Newspaper of the Year among New England weeklies with circulation over 5,000. The Martha’s Vineyard Times also was honored as a Distinguished Newspaper.
The American’s sister paper, the Mount Desert Islander, was named a Distinguished Newspaper among small circulation New England weeklies. The Vermont Standard of Woodstock, Vt., was Newspaper of the Year in that category. The Provincetown Independent of Massachusetts was recognized as a distinguished paper.
Judging of the contest is unusual in that the judges are newspaper readers rather than industry professionals.
Readers evaluate each paper’s reporting, photography, design and digital offerings.
“We are so pleased to be recognized with this distinction,” said Kathy Cook, general manager of The American and Islander. “Every single employee plays an integral part in our success and we’re thrilled to have their hard work recognized.”
