The Straw Way Family Housing project, located off of Water Street in Ellsworth, is nearly finished. The project developer is aiming to have the apartments occupied in March.

ELLSWORTH — A 29-unit affordable housing project located off of Water Street is scheduled to be finished by early next year and ready for occupants by March.

Straw Way Family Housing will consist of six buildings — five apartment buildings and a community center — and is being developed by Penquis Housing Inc.

Site work began on the project a year ago.

Stephen Mooers, chief executive officer of Penquis Housing, said the contractor for the project has until the end of January to finish its work.

In order to leave a little breathing room, Mooers said he is aiming for an occupancy date of March 1.

The Straw Way project will offer 19 two-bedroom and 10 three-bedroom apartments.
