93-year-old man killed in Perry fire

PERRY — A 93-year-old man died after fleeing his burning home Saturday in Perry, according to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

The body of the victim, Curtis Probert, was found in the driveway of his house on Birch Point Road. The blaze leveled the two-story home. The State Medical Examiner’s Office said Probert died from a combination of smoke inhalation and burns. He was able to escape the burning house, but collapsed in the driveway due to his injuries.

The fire was discovered by Probert’s wife, Antoinette Probert, who lives in a mobile home next door to the house. The house was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived late Saturday afternoon.

Investigators said the cause of the fire cannot be determined because of the extent of the damage.
