MILBRIDGE — For those who can’t wait to get home to sample the cake, “bohemian mama’s bakery and café” has what it calls a personal-sized version — a monster cupcake — that can be consumed without utensils on the drive home.

The bakery opened March 5 and is located at 4 School St. off Route 1A in Milbridge in the space most recently occupied by the craft shop, Firefly & Friends behind Water’s Edge Realty.
The bakery is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“My Mom had been doing wedding cakes for 36 years and we had both baked for large businesses,” Pritchard said. “We love having our hands in dough.”
She and her mother live in Addison and all of the baking is done in Pritchard’s licensed home kitchen. Their offerings — all super-sized — include a full menu of fruit pies, cakes, muffins, cupcakes, bars and cookies, as well as sticky buns, éclairs and cream puffs.
Their more popular items are the multilayer cakes, particularly chocolate, carrot and Italian cream. The sticky buns also fly off the shelves.
The two plan on offering bread in about three weeks, but said they purposely will not compete with Wildflour Bakery in neighboring Steuben.
“We’re going to do rye, wheat, Italian, French, typical table bread,” Pritchard said.
There is a small sitting area for customers who want to eat on site, and they plan on offering outdoor seating as the weather gets nicer.
Everything is baked from scratch, other than the ganache and pastry cream base, both of which are imported from Switzerland.
Bohemian mama does carry some paintings and other original work by artists, and at some point in the future will carry coffee mugs and T-shirts with the bakery logo.
