Nibbles: Soup, spaghetti and a bake-off

Soul soup

Soup for the Soul luncheons are being held on Fridays through March 27 at the United Baptist Church of Ellsworth. The next one is scheduled for Feb. 7. The luncheons — open to all — run from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The church is located at the corner of Hancock and Pine streets. Use the door off the lower parking lot on Spruce Street, across from Charlie’s Pizza. Luncheons will be canceled if schools are closed due to weather.

Noodles for a cause

The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of Hancock County is kicking off its new season with dinner and a show. Volunteers will host a pasta dinner with live local entertainment on Friday, Feb. 7, from 6-8 p.m. at the Elks Lodge in Ellsworth.

Dinner will include a choice of pasta (spaghetti or ziti), sauce (red or alfredo), rolls or garlic bread, and salad. There will be a raffle during dessert, but you must be present to win. Amanda Motts with Dot’s Photography will be there taking free photos. Pictures will be emailed after the event.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 10 and under, or $20 for a family.

Bread bake-off

Have a budding baker at home? The Jesup Memorial Library will host a Kids’ Bread Bake-off on Friday, Feb. 14. There will be three categories: yeast bread, gluten-free and a shaped or formed bread (such as a teddy bear, swan or whatever the entrant can dream up).

Bakers should deliver their breads to the library by 2:30 p.m. Feb. 14 and may enter as many categories as they like. Bread will be judged on outer appearance, texture and taste. There will be one winner in each category. Sign-up is required by Tuesday, Feb. 11. Call 288-4245 or stop by the library.
