Nibbles: Soup contest, vegetable gardening, and world cuisine

The Surry Community Improvement Association encourages folks to get out of the house and sample up to 10 soups/chowders and a variety of cookies at its mid-winter soup/chowder and cookie competition from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 17, at Surry Elementary School. The public will cast votes for Best Soup, Best Chowder, Best Cookie and Best Cookie by a Youth. Admission is a suggested $5 adult donation. Grow your own food

From Orland, Happy Town Farm proprietor Paul Volckhausen will teach a three-part class about growing vegetables sustainably starting at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 27, at RSU 25 Adult and Community Education, located at 102 Broadway, Suite 1, in Bucksport. The cost is $10.

An organic farmer, Volckhausen will cover the basics of soil science, making and using compost, weed control and other topics. Participants will pay a $5 fee to cover cost of materials. To sign up, call 469-2129, email [email protected] and visit http://rsu25.maineadulted.org

 

Recipes for adventure

Turkish meatballs, French onion soup, yaki soba with chicken and green beans and pavlova are on the menu of English teacher Christine Earley’s “Cooking Around the World” cooking series kicking off at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19, at RSU 25 Adult & Community Education’s (Room 7) at 102 Broadway in Bucksport.

Offered through RSU 25 Adult and Community Education, the first in the four-part series will focus class Turkish cuisine on March 19, French cuisine on March 26, Australian fare on April 2 and Japanese dishes on April 9.
