Perfect pies

Did you know Brooksville’s Tinder Hearth Bakery was a runner-up in Bon Appetit magazine’s 2017 “Pizzeria of the Year” contest? The Coastal Road bakery, widely known for its wood-fired European-style bread made with organic flour from Maine and Quebec, and New York City’s Scarr’s Pizza were the runners-up in Bon Appetit writer Julia Kramer’s survey. Her favorite was Timber Pizza Co. in Washington, D.C.’s Petworth neighborhood. By the way, the pizzeria has a pie called “The Julia.”

At Timber Hearth (worth the haul), pizza is made from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Fridays. The choices are meat, veggie and cheese. The bakery is located at 1452 Coastal Road. To place an order, call 326-8381. For more info, visit


Secrets of sourdough

In keeping with tradition, Steve Anastasia of Bar Harbor’s Old Dog Baking Co. will offer his annual sourdough bread-baking workshop from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 14, at The Neighborhood House in Northeast Harbor. The workshop is being sponsored by the Northeast Harbor Library. Participants will take home some dough to bake At home and a starter sample.
