SOUTHWEST HARBOR — The 12th annual Mount Desert Island Garlic Festival, scheduled for Saturday at Smuggler’s Den Campground in Southwest Harbor, has a dual purpose: serving people great food and helping out some worthy causes.

Festival founder and self-proclaimed “foodie” Frank Pendola views the event as one big party.
“It’s a day to come out, eat and relax,” he said during a recent interview at Nostrano, a private dinner club he operates in his Bar Harbor home.
