BUCKSPORT — Retirement proved a little too quiet for Marie Chiofolo, so the one-time town manager turned to baking.

“I’ve always been the family baker and done small functions for friends,” Chiofolo explained.
The lifetime hobby helped fill her time after leaving a career with 80-plus-hour work weeks.
She started by selling cookies and muffins at the gift shop on Fridays, when owner Carol Metthe offered breads from Friars’ Bakehouse in Bangor.
The sweets became so popular that Chiofolo decided to expand. Her bake shop, located at the rear of the gift shop, is open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
She “just can’t make enough” of her soft lemon biscotti. Not too tart or too sweet and featuring a fresh lemon fragrance, they fly off the shelves.
Her pizzelles, a wafer-thin Italian cookie made in a press, are crisp and crunchy and delicately flavored with anise.
