Grillin-N-Chillin

A new takeout by that name has surfaced in the Route 1 spot formerly occupied by much beloved Hot Diggity Dog in Hancock. Opposite Shirley’s Yarns & Crafts, and in the spirit of its esteemed predecessor, Grillin-N-Chillin offers all kinds of hot dogs from plain to smothered heaped with slaw. A variety of burgers and sandwiches also are available. Dough Boys too. Prices range from $2.25 for a plain hot dog to $9.50 for a crabroll. Sonya Bates, former bread baker and cake maker at Cleonice Mediterranean Bistro in Ellsworth, has started her own cottage business. On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, she supplies cinnamon rolls exclusively to The Maine Grind. Called Sonya’s Artisanal Baking, the Ellsworth bakery takes orders for brioche, brioche a tete and loaves ($4.75 each) of her seeded multigrain and roasted garlic and chive pan de vie (crumb bread). If you love rhubarb, consider sampling rhubarb wine produced by The Sow’s Ear in Brooksville. Light and crisp is how it has been described. Winery owner Tom Hoey’s harvests rhubarb from his own garden. The Sow Ear’s tasting room is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. Ounce for ounce, lobster is actually lower in calories and fat than skinless chicken breast. Info about Maine’s famous crustacean is among the topics in “Maine Regional Cooking” from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at the newly established Ambrosia Cooking School in Bar Harbor. Chef and culinary educator Sharon Joyce teaches the classes, which include tastings, at 19 Rodick St. Joyce studied advanced French cooking and pastry at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris.
