Yoga classes have popped up in every corner of Hancock County as many Mainers search for inner peace during these uncertain times.
“They’re searching for some of that calm and centeredness that doesn’t come from being busy and doing, doing, doing,” said Jessie Greenbaum of Mount Desert, who has been practicing yoga for over 20 years.
Greenbaum has taken classes for about 15 years with Roseanna Rich, a Lyengar yoga teacher and owner of The Yoga Place in Ellsworth.
To that end, The Yoga Place’s teachers have been offering a free yoga class on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to noon. This will go on at least until May.
Yoga seems simple. You breathe. You bend forward and backward. You stretch this way and that way. But the effect on the body and mind is magical.
Yoga reminds you that first and foremost you are a human being. You are more than your job, your spouse, your children, your house. The magic comes by being conscious and mindful.
Rich emphasizes yoga’s accessibility.
“There is a way yoga can work for every body,” Rich said. “I think the key is finding a teacher that you like and stick with it.”
There are physical benefits to yoga as well. Many people are able to heal injuries by practicing yoga. Yoga can help reduce the need for medicine for people with mild cases of asthma and high blood pressure. Studies have shown yoga can also help with attention deficit disorder.
