The Mighty Uke

Calling themselves the University of Machias Ukulele Club seems a misnomer for the the merrymakers and their fearless leader, Gene Nichols, who often sports yellow high-tops and red glasses.

They all play the four-stringed instrument, but an honest-to-God saw, train whistle, spoons and other instruments are also employed by the high-spirited group, which will perform from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, at the Ellsworth Public Library. The concert is free.

Start thinking about what songs you would like to hear from the group’s songbook, which numbers over 1,400 tunes ranging from Cole Porter’s “Don’t Fence Me In” to the Beatles’ “Eight Days a Week.” For more information, call 667-6363 or visit machias.edu/ukulele.html.
