Soup Kitchen Hosts Musical Event

SOUTHWEST HARBOR — The Common Good Community Soup Kitchen Community will be hosting Broadway by the Sea, a fund-raising evening of food and entertainment at the Common Good Cafe on Saturday, Oct. 10, from 6 to 9 p.m.

The evening will offer a medley of show tunes featuring at least five different performers. The show will be produced by Alex Newell, an instructor in theater for Mount Desert Island’s Summer Festival of the Arts Program for many years, a singer and a graduate with a major in theater from Emory University in Atlanta.

“We are really fortunate to have Alex Newell and the other incredibly talented local performers on board for this event,” said spokesman Larry Stettner of Manset. “I have known Alex since she was a student at SFOA; she was an incredibly gifted young teenaged performer back then, and has continued to develop into the dynamically talented and dedicated young woman that she is today.”

A light supper will be provided, buffet style. All are invited, with a voluntary donation of $10 per person suggested. Proceeds will go to the Common Good Soup Kitchen.

“This will be our last fund-raising event before we head into the winter season,” said Mr. Stettner. “We want to be in the best possible situation to be able to produce soups and whole grain salads for people locally and to help out other local organizations this winter, and are sure hoping that lots of folks will come on down, have a wonderful time, eat great food and open their hearts and wallets to support our program.”

The Common Good Cafe is located at 566 Seawall Road in Southwest Harbor, on the ocean at the site of the former Seawall Dining Room, adjacent to the Seawall Motel. It will continue to be open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., seven days a week, through Saturday, Oct. 17.
