Mount Desert Summer Chorale Presents Concert

BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Summer Chorale (MDSC) presents its 42nd season of concerts on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 7 and 8, beginning at 8 p.m. each night at St. Saviour’s Episcopal Church, 41 Mount Desert St. in Bar Harbor. There will be a pre-concert talk by music director David Schildkret at 7:30 p.m. each evening.

This year’s program, titled “Of Psalms and Kings,” features “Five Mystical Songs” by Vaughan Williams, and Bernstein’s “Chichester Psalms.” In addition, there are coronation anthems by Parry and Handel.

The chorale also will perform a setting of the “Twenty-Third Psalm” written by former MDSC music director George Emlen and Noel “Paul” Stookey, who is best known for his work as a member of the 1960s-era folk group Peter, Paul, and Mary. Both men are based in Blue Hill, Maine.

The featured soloist is bass Donald Wilkinson of Boston. There also will be two student soloists. Stephanie Leonardi of Northeast Harbor will be the soprano. Miss Leonardi is a student at Catholic University in Washington, D.C. Miriam Schildkret of Chandler, Ariz., will be the mezzo-soprano soloist. Miss Schildkret has sung with the chorale since 2000 and is a student at Ithaca College in New York.

Tickets for the concerts may be purchased in advance at Sherman’s book store, the libraries in Northeast Harbor and Southwest Harbor, and at the St. Saviour’s church office.

Admission also is available by donation at the door. For more information, contact Dave and Marty Ward at [email protected] or visit the chorale’s website at
