Middle school Jazz Bands set to compete

Jazz bands from Mount Desert Island’s four K-8 schools are tuning up for the District VI Middle School Jazz Festival on Tuesday, March 6, at the Center Drive School in Orrington.

The 36-piece band from the Conners-Emerson School performs at 3:30 p.m. Directed by Joe Wainer, the band is to perform drummer Buddy Rich’s “Channel One Suite” and Booker T. Jones’ “Green Onions.”

Mr. Wainer said this is the third time he’s dusted off the arrangement of “Channel One Suite.”

“It’s a very challenging piece of music,” he said.

The suite has three movements consisting of a violin cadenza followed by a trap drum solo and alto saxophone solo.

Soloists include tenor saxophonists Pierce DiMuro and Gabby Link, alto saxophonists Molly Brown, Molly Corson and Sapphire Geiger, violinist Yash Nair and drummer Kevin Elk.

“Green Onions” features solos by Pierce Vincenty, trombone; Jake Ressel and Ben Watson, guitars; Grace Higgins, flute; and Nick Ressel, trumpet.

The Mount Desert Elementary Jazz Band, directed by Ned Ferm, performs at 6:45 p.m. The set list includes Edgar Sampson’s swing-era classic, “Stompin’ at the Savoy,” Harold Arlen’s “Over the Rainbow” and the Bobby Hebb pop-hit “Sunny.”

Soloists on “Stompin’ at the Savoy” are alto saxophonist Paige Mason and trombonist Lucas Wood. Trumpeter Hannah Edgecomb is the featured soloist on “Over the Rainbow.” Ms. Edgecomb joins trumpeter Lydia Reifsnyder, tenor saxophonist Riley Mooers and drummer Peter Philbrook for solos on “Sunny.”

The Pemetic Elementary School Jazz Band, directed by Ed Michaud, takes the stage next at 7:15 p.m. The 23-member band is playing Dizzy Gillespie’s Latin classic “Manteca,” Joe Zawinul’s “Birdland” and a song made famous by the Drifters, “On Broadway.”

Soloists are Teddy Geary, trumpet and piano; Hayden Goodwin, alto saxophone; Emily Homer, trumpet, and Taylor McVicar, trombone.

The Tremont Consolidated School Jazz Band is performing two songs that have become standards, “Witchcraft” and “Sentimental Journey,” and a tune called “Crablegs.” Directed by Wanda Whitener, the band performs at 7:45 p.m. Soloists are Devin Christianson on trumpet and Seth Clark, drums.

Bands receiving a one or two rating will move on to the state middle school jazz competition on Saturday, March 24, at Stearns High School in Millinocket.
