Couple to Reopen Movie Theater at Maine Coast Mall

ELLSWORTH — A Marshfield couple intend to reopen the movie theater at Maine Coast Mall in May or June.

“We are very, very much looking forward to doing it,” Steve Richardson of FirstRun LLC, who is opening the theater with his wife, Barbara.

Richardson said they hope to open in time for Memorial Day weekend, but mid-June might be a more realistic date.

Ellsworth has been without a first-run movie theater since September when the Boston Culinary Group failed to renew its lease.

Richardson, who works in retail credit at Machias Savings Bank in Machias, said he and his wife have been researching the movie theater business for about two years.

The couple describe themselves as movie buffs. And with four children between the ages 8 and 16, they would like a first-run movie theater closer than the existing theaters in Calais and Bangor.

The Richardsons have quite a bit to do before opening day.

“When they left, they took everything with them,” Richardson said of the Boston Culinary Group. “There’s a lot of work ahead of us.”

FirstRun LLC has begun looking for employees. Richardson said they intend to hire two full-time and four part-time people to start.

He expects to have the theater open daily with expanded hours during the weekend.
