DEER ISLE — Triple Play is the name given to three outstanding and versatile musicians: Peter “Madcat” Ruth (harmonica, guitar, jaw harp, percussion, vocals), Joel Brown (folk and classical acoustic guitar, vocals) and Chris Brubeck (electric bass, bass trombone, piano, vocals).
The trio, whose members’ musical roots go back decades, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 28, at The Reach Performing Arts Center. The Deer Isle-Stonington Chamber of Commerce is hosting the concert to benefit the Cancer Support Center of Maine.
George Stevens Academy’s Quinn and the Tuplettes, under the direction of Steve Orlofsky, will open for Triple Play. Donations toward their school’s scholarship for aspiring young musicians also would be welcome.
Brubeck and Ruth have toured and recorded together in different settings since 1969, first as young rock musicians in the group New Heavenly Blue (with albums on RCA and Atlantic Records), Sky King (on Columbia), and later as jazz musicians touring the world with Dave Brubeck. They were audience favorites wherever the group played and were featured on two Atlantic Records released by Dave Brubeck.
Over the years, the trio has honed a vast and vivid repertoire encompassing Delta blues, Tin Pan Alley standards, New Orleans grooves, jazz gems and incisive originals. With all three contributing vocals, Triple Play delivers an epic sojourn through American music.
Tickets will be sold at the door and are available at The Periwinkle, The Turtle Gallery, Inn on the Harbor, Boyce’s Motel and at www.deerisle.com. For more info, contact Annie Gray at [email protected]eerisle.com.
