Figaro! Figaro! Fiiigarooo! Winter Harbor Music Fest to present “The Barber of Seville”



WINTER HARBOR — Rossini’s comic opera “The Barber of Seville,” about a cunning, sharp-scissored barber, Figaro, who helps Count Almaviva woo a beautiful orphan away from her pompous guardian, will be performed at 7 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, Aug. 18-20, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21, at Hammond Hall as part of the 2022 Winter Harbor Music Festival.

Directed by Deiran Manning, the production will feature the familiar voices of Josh Gurwitz, Celeste Mittlehauser, Henry Horstmann, Roland Dube and Brooke Daigle. They will be joined by Cassandra Petrie, Logan Tarwarter and Chris Jurak. Surry resident and opera singer Stephen L. Bryant has the role of the lecherous Don Bartolo. He has acted and sung has numerous roles with the New York City Opera, Spoleto Festival USA; San Francisco Opera, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Michigan Opera Theatre, Chautauqua Opera and Toledo Opera, Arizona Opera and Santa Fe Opera.

In addition, opera singer Charlie Calotta will play the young Count Almaviva. He has performed with the Florida Grand Opera, Opera North, the Maryland Opera Studio and the Boston-based activist opera company White Snake Productions. Abroad, he has performed in the Prague Summer Nights and the Lyrique International de Belle-Île en Mer Festival in France.

Bass-baritone Wil Kellerman, who was a 2021 Resident Artist at New York City’s Teatro Nuovo, and South African mezzo-soprano Liang Yu, who recently performed in Pergolesi’s “Stabat Mater” in Germany and in Händel’s “Messiah” with the Houston Choral Society, will also sing in “The Barber of Seville.”

The Downeast Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Wilbur Lin, will accompany the opera. Lin currently serves as the assistant conductor of the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra and conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony Youth Orchestras.
