WINTER HARBOR — The Downeast Chamber Ensemble, led by violinist and conductor Anatole Wieck, will perform orchestral music spanning four centuries and diverse musical styles at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 7, at Hammond Hall. The Downeast Chamber Ensemble includes local musicians as well as students in the University of Maine Orchestra in Orono.
Since 1986, Wieck has taught upper strings in UMaine’s School of Performing Arts and conducted the University of Maine Chamber Orchestra. He has performed and conducted in Europe, North and South America, and has participated in chamber music festivals such as Chamber Music/West (San Francisco), White Nights (St. Petersburg, Russia) and festivals in Montepulciano, Italy, and Newport, R.I. Born in the Baltic state Latvia, the professor received his early musical training in Riga and Moscow. In 1973, he came to the United States to study at The Juilliard School of Music in New York City, where he earned his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees.
Admission is $10 per person. Concert-goers will have the option of going in-person or attending virtually the live-streamed performance. Those attending in-person must wear masks and observe social distancing. To reserve seats, visit winterharbormusicfestival.com/events.
