Surry celebrates art installation

SURRY — The town of Surry will celebrate the installation of its new pieces of outdoor art with a program on Saturday, Sept. 27, at the town landing.

Beginning at 1 p.m., local residents and other interested parties will gather to view the new sculpture “Wave Sounds” and its companion sculpted bench.

The large sculpture, carved by Swiss artist Bertha Shortiss, is accompanied by an original granite bench given to Surry in recognition of its fundraising efforts to support the Schoodic International Sculpture Symposium (SISS). The site also will include a second granite bench donated by Surry Elementary School Principal Cathy Lewis.

Speakers, including a selectman, a lifelong town resident and a representative of SISS, will trace the process of bringing the sculpture to Surry. Surry Elementary School students will provide music and also will display their own sculpted work.

Light refreshments will be served following the program.
